Robert Nugent named as Topeka Metro General Manager

TOPEKA, KAN. (August 19, 2019) – The Topeka Metro board of directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Robert “Bob” Nugent as the new general manager.

With over thirty years in the transit industry, Nugent has worked in both the public and private sectors. He currently serves as the public transit administrator for the City of Lawrence, Kansas, and has been in that position since 2009.

Prior to his position in Lawrence, Nugent worked in the public sector for the City of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority, and the Transit Authority of River City in Louisville, Kentucky. In the private sector, he spent several years working as a consultant and independent contractor in large cities such as New York City, Chicago, Seattle, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas and Tampa.

In these positions, he has gained considerable experience in both fixed route and paratransit aspects of public transportation, including demand management, planning, scheduling, marketing, service operations and customer service.

Some of Nugent’s accomplishments while at Lawrence Transit:

  • Increased overall ridership 250%
  • Implemented first alternative powered (hybrid) vehicles in Kansas
  • Implemented late night service to address employment issues
  • Implemented mobile tools to provide real-time bus information for users of the service
  • Guided Lawrence Transit to a seamless and fully coordinated service with the University of Kansas service

Currently, Nugent represents Lawrence Transit in the Kansas Public Transportation Association. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Nugent has degrees from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Nugent will assume his new position with Topeka Metro in early October 2019.
