Request for Public Comment for Proposed Bike Stations
Topeka Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metro) is in the initial planning stages for a project funded in part by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The project would involve the construction of bikeshare stations on Topeka and Shawnee County park properties. Metro will accept comments until June 6, 2018.

This project proposes to build 20-40 bike stations in the City of Topeka for the Topeka Metro Bikes (TMB) bikeshare system. Up to fifteen (15) of these stations could be on Topeka or Shawnee County park property. Permanent easement, varying in size from 70 square feet to 200 square feet, would be needed to provide Metro with the legal rights to use a portion of the property, while Topeka or Shawnee County would continue to retain ownership of the entire park property. No trees will be removed or relocated. At six of the park sites, one parking space may be removed to accommodate a bike station.
Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation Act of 1966 provides special protection and opportunity for obtaining input from the public when park resources may be used and or impacted by transportation projects. Based on the proposed bike stations and associated landscape improvements, this project is not anticipated to adversely affect any of the activities, features, or attributes associated with any of the park properties in question. In accordance with federal requirements, the views of the public are being sought regarding the effect of the proposed project on public recreational areas before FTA finalizes its Section 4(f) determination.
